I plan on setting up an in school program where kids deemed to have intellectual disabilities, are paired with non IEP students. They would be in the same classes. Have the non IEP student would work individually with the IEP student as a tutor for both academic and social skills. I think this individual help would be good to get kids who just need a little extra help, that extra help. But also give the chance for the non IEP student to let it be known if the kid is actually really good at something they haven't been given a chance to be good at. This is also good for the non IEP student because they will learn acceptance and empathy. At high school levels the IEP students will all start in this program and the non IEP students will have this offered as a class. They would have home room together to work on whatever needs worked on. The home room instructor could pass on guidance to the counselors.

I don't think the ad is about replacing one set of assumptions with another as much as it is about humanizing people with disabilities. When you make a new friend, you don't decide what they want or are capable of; you listen to them and respect their opinion because they are a person. There are times when your friends don't want to ask for the help they need, but you don't assume that every time they say they can handle something they're wrong.

Ummm maybe we should not assume that everyone with DS are all the same. I wouldn’t assume someone with the Mental capacity of possibly a small child can not consent to sex and drinking alcohol just because someone else with DS can. So maybe assuming isn’t always great.
